Hello! I’m Valerie Franklin. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, National Board Certified Counselor and have spent the majority of my career as a Professional School Counselor. I am driven in my desire to elevate those who are often ignored, pushed aside, and devalued by our society. Throughout my career, I have supported African American and Latino youth as well as immigrants and their families in the school setting, developmentally disabled adults, foster children, their biological families, and foster families. My experiences have included work in the areas of children/adolescents, teenage parents, young adults, court involved youth, depression, anxiety, academic concerns, college/career planning, personal growth, parenting, and life transitions. I have experience with individuals, groups and families.
My primary goal as your therapist is to help you to live a meaningful, purpose filled life and to reach your greatest potential. I have a soft spot for the youth and understand the particular challenges that they face in today’s world. I am passionate about uplifting African American people and focusing on the unique strengths and struggles of the community. I practice therapy from a Person Centered, Cognitive Behavioral, Solution Focused and Strengths Based perspective.
I strongly believe in addressing the holistic needs of each individual while incorporating the foundations of spirituality, mindfulness, and empowerment. Through spirituality you can become aware of and get in tune with your inner voice of guidance. This can empower you, which can then allow you to build trust in yourself and your self-sufficiency. You are the expert of your life! I am just the guide and a resource to help you through the journey.
In practicing mindfulness, you will focus on the now, while at the same time planning for life, fully aware that sometimes things happen outside of our control, yet having the courage, internal belief, and resourcefulness to adapt to life’s circumstances.
Through our work you will build on your strengths and develop healthy coping strategies that are tailored for you. Your work with me will be met with compassion, empathy, patience and authenticity while developing an awareness of how your past connects to your present self.
I am excited to work with you on your path to Heal, Rise, and Soar!
